Students with financial needs can apply for Pell Grant application- a federal assistance given to post secondary students. It was first called the Basic Educational Opportunity Grant and later changed to Pell Grant after the US Senator from Rhode Island, Claiborne Pell.
The grant is not an end in itself. It is just actually a foundational aid package where other scholarships can flow through. Currently, the Pell Grant application is given by the United States Department of Education. This agency decides whether or not a Pell Grant Applicant has financial needs. All applicants are reported under the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), where the Department of Education access all applications for evaluation using their standard formula. The Pell Grant is not a loan scholarship and is regulated under the Higher Education Act 1965. Since it intends to help students with financial needs, the grant does not need to be repaid. The Pell Grant is recognized in about 5,400 postsecondary institutions, including vocational schools. Requirements for Eligibility:
1.The most important requirement is the financial need. Applicants with an annual family income of $20,000 most likely get the scholarship; although some of those with $45,000 annual family income had also qualified in the past.
2.Secondary Diploma. Entrants should have finished their high school first before they can qualify for the grant. GEDs are also honored.
3. Citizenship. A Pell Grant Applicant must be a US citizen or a permanent resident of the United States.
Non-citizen may still qualify provided that they should be one of the following:
• Alien with I-551;
• Conditional Permanent Citizen with I-551C Card;
• Parolee• Refuge grantee• Refugee or Immigrant
• A Cuban-Haitian applicant possessing an Arrival Departure Record given by the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS)
• An applicant with satisfactory academic performance
• An applicant with legitimate Social Security Number
• A certified grant applicant.
All applicants to Pell Grant must be registered under FAFSA before the United States Department of Education will be able to assess applications for financial eligibility assessment. By registering, applicants must also be certified that they are not, in any circumstance, receiving federal aids or paying other academic loans during the application.
Each Pell Grant Applicant qualifying for the grant can enjoy the benefits for as long as they keep a good General Point Average and refrain from getting involved in any crime and drug-related operations.
